Microwaves as Diagnostic Tool for Pituitary Tumors: Preliminary Investigations

To date, tumors, the second cause of death worldwide, are a modern medicine plight. The development rapid, cost-effective and reliable prevention diagnostics tools is mandatory to support clinicians ensure patients’ adequate intervention. Pituitary tumors class neoplasm, which calls for suitable ad hoc diagnostic tools. Recently, microwaves have gained interest as non-ionizing, non-invasive valuable approach identifying pathologic tissues according their dielectric properties. This work deals with preliminary investigation feasibility using diagnose pituitary tumors. In particular, it focuses on benign adenohypophysis, e.g., adenomas. It assumed access region by following trans-sphenoidal approach. problem was modeled developing an equivalent transmission line model multi-layered, lossy (front bone sphenoid sinuses, air in posterior gland tumor). forward developed investigate coefficient most favorable propagation conditions. Then, analyzed if, solution inverse problem, possible reconstruct permittivity electrical conductivity profiles identify tumor presence. results promising since maximum reconstruction error 8% found, worst case, thus paving way use diagnosis
